How To Serve Constructive Criticism

A lot of people don’t know how to serve constructive criticism, or criticism at all. Sometimes it’s hard, unless you know the person, to give accurate criticism. Some people only wants the “good” things (e.g. “it was nice that you…”), others only want the bad things (the things which actually are good; “You can do this, instead of that…”).

I talked with a coach (Kim Terje, website) about this issue, and he came up with a great illustration. He described a comment, on whatever it might be, as a burger.

Burger

The steak is constructive criticism, and the breads are positivly charged words.

  1. Start with positively charged words like; “I liked that you did that…”
  2. Serve your constructive criticism e.g.; “You could do that instead…”, “It wasn’t good that you…”
  3. End up with some positively charged words again; “To sum up, you did a great presentation…”

I’ve used this method and it actually works ;)

Cheers!
